Chelsea Complete £52m Signing Of Crystal Palace Defender Lacroix

Chelsea have completed the signing of France international defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a deal worth £52m, as the club continues to reshape its squad ahead of the new Premier League season under incoming head coach Xabi Alonso.

The 26-year-old centre-back has signed a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge running until 2032.

Lacroix arrives at Chelsea just over a year after joining Crystal Palace from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in 2024, in a deal initially worth £15.5m.

His time at Selhurst Park proved to be a springboard rather than a destination. Under manager Oliver Glasner, Lacroix established himself as a first-team regular, making 55 appearances in all competitions last season as Palace won the UEFA Conference League – the first major European trophy in the club’s history.

Negotiations between Chelsea and Palace were reportedly lengthy, with both the transfer fee and Lacroix’s personal terms taking time to resolve.

Uncertainty lingered over the move until relatively recently, with Lacroix said to have given the transfer his final approval only last week, once France’s World Cup campaign had concluded.

Lacroix has won seven caps for France and featured for Les Bleus at the 2026 World Cup, making three appearances including the third-place play-off defeat by England, as France finished fourth in the tournament.

Speaking after finalising his move, Lacroix pointed to the current Chelsea squad as a factor in his decision, name-checking teammates Reece James and Morgan Rogers and describing his desire to be part of what he called the club’s ongoing story.

He said he was proud and excited to join the project, and eager to meet his new teammates and manager as preparations begin for the new season.

Lacroix becomes Chelsea’s third signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrivals of winger Morgan Rogers and defender Marco Palestra, as the club prepares for its first campaign under Alonso.

Chelsea had already agreed deals in 2025 for winger Geovany Quenda and forward Emmanuel Emegha, with both moves formally completed this month.

The club remains active in the market, with talks reportedly ongoing to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck and Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson.

Chelsea had identified centre-back reinforcement as a priority following a season in which the club’s defensive form fell short of expectations, with a lack of physicality and on-field leadership cited as key issues.

Lacroix, who stands at 6ft 4in, had reportedly been Chelsea’s preferred option on a shortlist that also included Manchester City’s John Stones and Como defender Jacobo Ramon.

The signing reflects a broader change in direction at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season and ended the campaign without a trophy – a result that frustrated large sections of the fanbase.

Co-owner Behdad Eghbali has said the club intends to “tweak” its recruitment model, adding more experienced players alongside what he still regards as a talented young core that includes Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill.

Notably, at 26, Lacroix is the oldest player Chelsea have signed since Eghbali and the club’s sporting directors took charge of recruitment.

The shift in approach was further underlined by Chelsea’s attempt – ultimately unsuccessful – to sign 34-year-old Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, a deal that would have reunited him with former Bayer Leverkusen boss Alonso.

Although that move didn’t materialise, it signalled a clear change in the type of profile Chelsea are now willing to pursue.
Combined with the £117m arrival of Morgan Rogers – who turned 24 last Saturday – the signing of Lacroix means Chelsea have fulfilled their stated aim of bringing in at least two “ready-made” first-team players this summer.
