Chike Akunyili’s Murder: Buhari Asked To Declare State Of Emergency In South-East

In the wake of the reported murder of Chike Akunyili, the husband of the late Dora Akunyili, President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to declare a State of Emergency in the South East region.

Akunyili was murdered by yet-to-be-identified persons in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Tuesday evening, according to reports.

The deceased, a medical doctor, was said to be returning from the inaugural memorial lecture/award organized for Dora, the late former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), when the gunmen accosted his vehicle and shot to him dead.

But reacting in a Facebook post on Wednesday, Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), called on the Buhari administration to suspend normal constitutional procedures in the South-East and order security agencies to take control of the region.

Igbokwe wrote: “since governors and our leaders in the South East are now deaf and dumb, let me say it with all the emphasis in my command that FG (Federal Government) should declare state of emergency in the SE (South East).”

Meanwhile, THE WHISTLER gathered from sources that Akunyili’s murder may be a case of mistaken identity as the deceased was reportedly riding in a car bearing Spy number plate when the assailants attacked and killed him.
