Film Lab Africa Heads To Kano As Anthology Production Advances

Film Lab Africa will bring its Creative Hustle and Film Club programmes to Kano on August 6, following successful editions in Abuja and Jos that connected filmmakers, students, producers, writers, directors and other creative professionals.

The Kano event is expected to feature a full day of industry conversations, networking, learning and collaboration aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s growing film and television sector.

The Abuja and Jos sessions attracted both emerging and established creatives, offering participants opportunities to engage with leading industry professionals through Creative Hustle’s interactive discussions on building sustainable careers in the screen industry.

Film Club also complemented the programme with curated screenings and engaging conversations that encouraged participants to explore African cinema, contemporary storytelling and the evolving creative landscape.

As the nationwide initiative expands, Film Lab Africa has entered a new phase with the production of the Film Lab Africa Anthology, a collection of original short films developed through the programme’s training and mentorship activities.

The anthology brings together selected writers and producers from the programme to produce original African stories while giving emerging filmmakers practical production experience under the guidance of established industry professionals.

The first anthology film, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Daniel Oriahi, has been completed, while production is ongoing on the second film directed by Biodun Stephen.

Speaking on the initiative, Chikodi Onyemerela, Director of Programmes at the British Council Nigeria, said Film Lab Africa reflects the organisation’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s creative economy by investing in talent, partnerships and practical opportunities for the screen sector.

He said the programme equips emerging filmmakers with skills, professional networks and hands-on production experience through mentorship and collaboration, adding that the British Council looks forward to engaging more creatives as the programme arrives in Kano.

Since its launch, Film Lab Africa has continued to support emerging creatives through Creative Hustle, Film Club, mentorship, networking opportunities and anthology production, helping participants develop their craft and build careers in Nigeria’s creative industry.
