Fire Guts Popular Superstore In Lagos

A fire outbreak on Thursday gutted part of a popular supermarket in the Egbeda-Akowonjo area of Lagos, destroying the electronics section on the second floor of the building.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said the incident occurred at Justrite Superstore, located at No. 116, Akowonjo Road, Jimoh Bus Stop, Egbeda-Akowonjo.

According to a statement issued by the Controller General of the agency Margaret Adeseye, it received a distress call at about 8:15 a.m., while firefighters from the Abesan and Agege Fire Stations arrived at the scene by 8:28 a.m.

The fire service said the blaze was confined to the second floor of the commercial building, which houses the electronics section of the supermarket.

It stated that firefighters swiftly deployed firefighting equipment and carried out coordinated operations to contain the fire, prevent it from spreading to adjoining sections of the building, and protect lives, property and the environment.

The agency said the fire had been completely extinguished, while recovery of the remains and mopping-up operations were ongoing.

It added that preliminary findings suggest the fire may have originated from an alternative power source, specifically a solar inverter system.

No casualty was recorded in the incident.

“The incident involves the second floor of the commercial building, housing the electronics section of the store. Upon arrival, firefighters swiftly deployed firefighting equipment and commenced coordinated operations to contain the fire, prevent its spread to adjoining sections of the building, and safeguard lives, property and environment.

“The Fire has been put out as recovery of the remains is ongoing to bring the mop up exercise to a wrap. The cause of the fire is suggestive of alternative power source solar inverter system while no casualty has been recorded,” the statement read.
