SPOTLIGHT: How Olori Atuwatse III Is Redefining Royalty In The Warri Kingdom

There is a striking image that captures the essence of modern royalty in the Niger Delta. It isn’t a picture of a crown or a great palace throne. Rather, it is the sight of a woman dressed in crisp white, stepping off a boat into a remote, muddy riverine community, holding the hands of local children and listening to the concerns of the market. Meet the rightful Queen Consort of the Warri Kingdom, Olori Atuwatse III, and she is on a mission to rewrite the rules on what it means to be a modern African Queen.

At the time of her husband’s accession to the throne as Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, many people knew that the kingdom was about to witness a new era. What few could have guessed, though, were the various ways in which the Olori would weave through the social and humanitarian fabric of this ancient realm. She has come into the royal role with a very pragmatic, systematic, and compassionate mindset, being trained as a corporate lawyer and entrepreneur. She is not just a force to be reckoned with from a distance but someone who rolls up her sleeves and gets to work when it is needed most.

Her royal agenda is driven by a strong focus on human capital development, especially in the fields of healthcare and education. The hard-to-reach riverine communities of the Warri kingdom have been experiencing the challenges of basic medical access for decades now. Olori Atuwatse III did just that and created the Wuwu Ore Initiative. This flagship healthcare program routinely sends medical staff, supplies, and free clinics to areas not otherwise served, providing lifesaving healthcare to those most in need right to their own front doors.

Her influence goes beyond health. She is making a huge investment in the future generation through the Royal Iwere Foundation, which she leads with the King, and her targeted educational initiatives, such as Elegbaeta and the Captain Fola Initiatives. She has always believed in literacy and giving scholarships to upgrade learning tools for left-behind kids. For her, education is not a privilege but the key to tipping the poverty cycle at the regional level.

The Olori’s personality is what distinguishes her from the others, though she is warm and accessible. She has shattered barriers in a society where royalty is seen as out of reach and unreachable. From high-level global economic fora discussing African philanthropy to a wooden bench, where she interacts with a grandmother living in a rural village, she is the same person. She is a voice for the weak, a champion for the women of the Niger Delta and a real mother to her kingdom. The most authentic test of a queen is not the loft of her beads and crown, but the quality of her service to his king, peopleand Olori Atuwatse III is proving herself to be such a queen.
