State Policing: Sokoto Donates 20 Vehicles, 710 Motorcycles To Community Guards

The Sokoto state government has handed over 20 Hilux vans and 710 motorcycles to the newly established community guard Corps in the state as part of its efforts to enhance security.

The vehicles and motorcycles were presented to the commanders of the 13 local government areas with high cases of banditry at the state headquarters in Sokoto.

During the event,the special adviser to the governor on security matters, retired Col. Abdul Usman, said that the vehicles are meant to enhance the corps’ ability to penetrate remote areas and protect communities from bandit threats.

Usman urged the personnel to use the vehicles judiciously to ensure proper utilisation and maintenance.

He however reminds the corps that their roles are complementary, and are expected to compliment the conventional security outfits in safeguarding the rural communities.

While speaking, the director administration, department of security matters, Almustapa Sayudi stated that the vehicles are meant to further equip the corps in navigating through nooks and crannies of the affected communities.

Sayudi added that he is optimistic that with the recent development security challenges will be cropped to its minimum in the state.

He urged the general public to be more security conscious and report any suspicious movement to the relevant authorities.

Assuring the maintenance of the vehicles, the State Commissioner for local governments and Chieftaincy Matters,Ibrahim Dadi Adare, said the state government has allocated funds for upkeep and easier mobility.

During the handover of the vehicles, the state Commander of the Corps, retired Col. Musa Na Allah Idris, expressed confidence in his personnel’s ability to effectively utilise the resources to combat banditry.

This development follows the establishment of the Community Guard Corps by the Sokoto State Government, in line with a resolution by the North-West Governors’ Forum to establish a state-based Community Watch Corps.

It could be recalled that Katsina State was the first to launch the programme followed by Zamfara State, subsequently Sokoto State.

The community corps which are drawn from across the 23 LGAs are expected to assist the security forces in tackling the outrageous security challenges in the state.
