Sweden Sacks Coach After Three Defeats In W’Cup Qualifiers

The Swedish Football Association has announced the sacking of coach Jon Dahl Tomasson following three straight losses in World Cup qualifying.

The FA said the decision was taken based on the team’s poor performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

On Monday, Sweden lost to Kosovo 1-0 in Gothenburg thanks to a solitary strike by Fisnik Asllani of Hoffenheim.

The Federation announced Tomasson’s sacking in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement read: “The decision is based on the fact that the men’s national team has not delivered the results we hoped for.

“There is still a chance of a play-off in March, and our responsibility is to ensure we have as optimal conditions as possible to be able to reach a World Cup play-off.

“In this, we assess that a new leadership is required in the form of a new coach.”

Despite having Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres and Liverpool striker Alexander Isak starting together up front, Sweden have failed to score in their last three matches and sit bottom of Group B.

Tomasson was named the first foreign coach of the Swedish men’s national side when he replaced the long-serving Janne Andersson in February 2024, having previously won the Swedish title with Malmö and impressed in charge of Blackburn Rovers.

The Swedish FA said that work on finding a new manager will begin immediately.

Switzerland top of Group B with 10 points from four games and two rounds of matches remaining.

Kosovo has seven points, Slovenia has three, and Sweden has only one point, meaning they must win both of their final games to have any hope of finishing second and reaching the play-offs.
