U.S. President Donald Trump said today that Iran’s president has asked the United States for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict, but added that Washington would only consider such a request once the Strait of Hormuz is “open, free and clear” for international shipping.
Trump made the remarks in a post on his Truth Social platform, writing that Iran’s leader “has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE!” He added: “We will consider when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!”
There was no independent confirmation from Iranian authorities that such a ceasefire request had been formally made. Iranian officials have not publicly acknowledged Trump’s claim, and the government in Tehran did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but vital passage through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply transits, has been a central point of tension in the conflict. Trump’s conditions for considering a ceasefire tie directly to the status of the strait and its accessibility for global commerce.
Trump’s comments came as he was preparing to address the nation later today on developments in the Iran conflict.
