127 Journalists Killed In 31 Countries In 3 Months – WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO), citing a report of one its sister agencies (UNESCO) on Wednesday, disclosed that 127 journalists have been murdered in 31 countries in the last three months.

“According to @UNESCO, which has been working with Press Emblem Campaign, between 1 March-31 May 127 journalists were killed in 31 countries. Others have been harassed & detained while reporting #COVID19,” WHO’s Director General, Tedros Adhanom stated.

Tedros Adhanom also said that the role of journalists in national development could not be overemphasized.

He added that Journalists play a vital role in keeping the world informed about developments, including Covid-19.

“I want to acknowledge journalists on this call & around the world.

“Journalists are critical to holding decision makers to account and communicating lifesaving public health messages to the general public,” he said.

Furthermore, he called on relevant actors to ensure that journalists were protected.

“They should never be a target for violence; they should be protected so that they can continue to do their critical work,” WHO tweeted.
