The former Senator representing Kogi West senatorial district in Kogi State, Dino Melaye, has mourned an army general from the state, Major-General Olu Irefin, who reportedly died from COVID-19-related complications on Thursday.
Until his death, Irefin, an indigene of Kogi State, was the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6-Division in Port-Harcourt, Rivers state.
THE WHISTLER had earlier reported that Irefin’s infection with COVID-19 and his subsequent death had prompted the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, to suspend the ongoing COAS Annual Conference taking place in Abuja.
Reacting to Irefin’s death, Melaye recalled that he had dined with the army general when they met at their Ayetoro Gbede hometown in Kogi State about a fortnight ago.
The former senator tweeted: “My brother and Friend. We were still eating and laughing together less than 2 weeks ago in the village. General Irefin, down to earth, unassuming and humble to a fault. Did not know your speech at Anglican Church Aiyetoro Gbede will be the last for me. Philanthropist and humanist.”
