Jigawa Community Launches Savings Scheme For Medical Emergencies

Residents of Rorau community in Kazaure Local Government Area of Jigawa State have established a communal savings scheme to help households meet emergency healthcare expenses and reduce delays in seeking treatment.

Under the initiative, residents make regular contributions based on their financial capacity, with the pooled funds made available to members during medical emergencies.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Kazaure, residents said the scheme had provided an alternative source of financial assistance for families struggling to raise money for urgent medical needs.

A resident, Shamsiya Hadi, said the initiative had enabled community members to respond more quickly when illness occurred.

She said the regular contributions made it easier for residents to access funds when emergencies arose.

“Sometimes, sickness comes when a family has no money at hand. With the savings scheme, members can get assistance when there is an urgent health need,” she said.

Another resident, Balarabe Ibrahim, said the initiative had strengthened cooperation among residents while encouraging families to prepare for unexpected healthcare expenses.

He said even small, regular contributions could provide significant support during emergencies and promote collective responsibility for vulnerable members of the community.

Hinde Audu said the scheme had also reduced the pressure on families to borrow money when they needed urgent medical attention.

According to her, some households often struggle to raise funds for transportation, consultation, medicines and other immediate healthcare needs.

“Having community savings means that we do not always have to wait until somebody has money before seeking help. The support can come at the time it is needed,” she said.

Mamman Halliru said the initiative had increased awareness about the importance of saving for emergencies, adding that the community hoped to sustain the scheme and expand participation.

He called on government agencies, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders to support community-based initiatives that help vulnerable households manage healthcare-related financial pressures.

Halliru stressed that the savings scheme was intended to complement, rather than replace, access to affordable and quality healthcare services.

“We urge relevant authorities to continue improving healthcare facilities and services in rural communities to ensure that residents can receive timely treatment during emergencies,” he said.

NAN reports that the initiative reflects efforts by rural communities to develop local mechanisms for managing unexpected financial challenges, particularly those associated with healthcare.
