The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (Kaduna DisCo) recorded the weakest revenue recovery among Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies in April 2026, recovering only 43.15 per cent of its expected revenue despite the industry generating over N801bn in collections between January and April.
Data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) showed Kaduna DisCo lagged behind all 11 distribution companies, highlighting persistent challenges in revenue collection amid widespread electricity supply disruptions.
According to the regulator’s commercial performance report, Eko Electricity Distribution Company topped the industry with a revenue recovery efficiency of 102.09 per cent in April, while Port Harcourt, Abuja, Ikeja and Benin DisCos all posted recovery rates above 85 per cent.
In contrast, Kaduna DisCo recovered just 43.15 per cent of its expected revenue, the lowest in the country. Kano and Jos DisCos also underperformed, recording recovery efficiencies of 51.87 per cent and 52.48 per cent, respectively.
Industry-wide, electricity distribution companies billed customers N1.01tn between January and April but collected only N801.16bn, leaving about N207.77bn in unpaid electricity bills.

The poor performance came during months of severe electricity shortages caused largely by inadequate gas supply to thermal power plants.
National electricity generation dropped below 2,000 megawatts at some points, forcing the Transmission Company of Nigeria to ration available power to distribution companies.
Operational data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator showed that thermal plants required about 1,629.75 million standard cubic feet of gas daily to operate optimally, but actual supply stood at only about 692 million standard cubic feet per day as of February 23, representing less than 43 per cent of demand.
Despite gradual improvements in electricity supply towards the end of April, consumers have continued to complain about poor service, estimated billing and high electricity tariffs.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission reminded consumers that electricity supply licensees cannot recover charges older than 12 months except in cases involving meter tampering, illegal electricity use or obstruction of meter reading.
