Rivers Police Arrest Officer Who Shot Colleague Dead

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of Inspector Ibrahim Sani following a tragic shooting incident involving a fellow police officer in Port Harcourt.

The incident occurred at about 1:20 p.m. on Sunday at Next Cash and Carry Supermart, Trans-Amadi area of the state capital. Inspector Sani, attached to 14 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Yola, was on joint guard duty with military personnel alongside Inspector Daniel Dauda when the shooting occurred.

A police statement by CSP Grace Iringe-Koko said the suspect, Inspector Victor Okus, a colleague attached to 17 PMF but on special duty at Intels, Onne, allegedly shot the two officers in the head and neck regions.

She noted that preliminary findings and the account of the Unit Commander of 14 PMF, DSP Turaki Hassan, the injured officers, were immediately rushed to Nopsam Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

She explained that Inspector Sani was later pronounced dead, while Inspector Dauda is currently receiving treatment and said to be in stable condition.

The remains of the deceased officer have been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary in Port Harcourt for preservation and autopsy.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, described the shooting as tragic and deeply regrettable.

He ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

She said: “The suspect has been arrested and is presently in police custody.

Police authorities disclosed that he will face an Orderly Room Trial and will subsequently be charged to court for prosecution.

CP Adepoju cautioned officers on the handling of firearms, stressing that the use of weapons while on duty carries serious responsibility and must be approached with discipline and caution to prevent avoidable loss of lives.

The Command extended its condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of the late Inspector Ibrahim Sani while reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and justice within the Force.
