Rivers United Bus Crashes While Travelling For Federation Cup Tie

Rivers United FC team contingent was involved in a road accident on Thursday en-route to Awka, Anambra State, for the President Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United FC.

A statement put out by the club said the incident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt, shortly after the team departed from the club’s camp.

Rivers United also highlighted that they consider the safety, health and well-being of their players and officials of utmost priority, adding that their medical team is closely monitoring those involved, while management continues to assess the situation and make necessary arrangements.

“We can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported. All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition.

“Rivers United FC appreciates the concern, prayers, and support from fans, partners, and the football community during this time.

“Further updates regarding the team’s travel plans and the status of the Federation Cup fixture will be communicated in due course,” the club said.

Meanwhile, Enugu Rangers FC management has extended its heartfelt sympathy to Rivers United over the unfortunate road traffic accident involving the Clubs contingent to The President Federation fixture in Awka.
In a statement he signed on behalf of the club, Rangers General Manager Amobi Ezeaku expressed gratitude to God that no life was lost and prayed for quick recovery for players and officials who sustained injuries.

All eight fixtures are set to take place on Saturday, 6 June, with most matches concentrated in the nation’s capital, Abuja, and a few others hosted in Awka and Benin City.

In Abuja, multiple pitches will come alive. At the Area 3 Stadium, Sokoto United will lock horns with Adamawa United, while later at the same venue, Kada Warriors face a stern test against Wikki Tourists.

At the Bwari pitch will host two intriguing ties: Bida Lions versus Flight FC, and Sunshine Stars U19 welcoming Barau FC. Over at the Abuja Goal Project, Plateau United square off against FC Basira, followed by a heavyweight encounter between Bendel Insurance and El-Kanemi Warriors.

The round’s marquee fixture sees Ikorodu City take on Enyimba at the prestigious Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
