Trump Ally Released From Prison One Week To US Election

Steve Bannon, a longtime ally of Republican Presidential Candidate, Donald Trump, has been released from prison after serving a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress, just a week before the US Election.

Bannon, who was chief strategist in the Trump administration, was held in contempt after defying a subpoena in a congressional investigation into the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

The spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Kristie Breshears, confirmed that Bannon left the federal correctional institution in Danbury, Connecticut by 3:15 am local time

Bannon reported to prison in early July after the Supreme Court rejected his last bid to delay his sentence.

He was convicted of two counts of contempt in July 2022, for refusing to sit for a deposition with the January 6 House committee and for refusing to provide documents related to his involvement in Trump’s alleged attempts to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election.

According to his representatives, he plans to hold a press conference later today in Manhattan.

When he began serving his sentence in July, Bannon called himself a “political prisoner”.

“I am proud of going to prison,” he said at the time, adding that he was standing up to the attorney general, Merrick Garland, and a “corrupt” justice department.

At the hearing on his appeal back in May, Bannon’s legal team argued that the congressional subpoena was invalid because Trump had asserted executive privilege.

Prosecutors, however, said Bannon had left the White House years before and Trump had never invoked executive privilege in front of the committee.

Donald Trump is seeking re-election in a race observers say will be very tight. He faces the incumbent administration, with Vice President, Kamala Harris as flag bearer.

Meanwhile, early voting has resumed across some states in the country, as the Democrats hope to retain power for a second tenure running.
