80 Killed, 300 Wounded In Kabul Suicide Car Bombing

No fewer than 80 people have died and 300 others wounded following a suicide car bombing in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan.

The explosion occurred during the rush hour at about 8:30 a.m. local time, close to the German embassy.

The blast was caused by a suicide attacker, and was in a water delivery truck, according to Najib Danish, a spokesman for the interior ministry. The Afghan health ministry confirmed the casualty numbers, which are expected to rise.

The explosion took place near Zanbaq square, in the Afghanistan capital, close to a highly secure diplomatic area.

Houses hundreds of meters away from the blast were damaged with windows and doors blown off their hinges.

According to locals, the attack is the biggest in the city this year.

Video from the scene showed a towering plume of black smoke and emergency vehicles speeding toward it. Soldiers in fatigues stood with guns drawn as sounds of screams, blaring sirens and traffic pierced the morning sky, the CNN reports.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Taliban and Islamic State militants have carried out several attacks in that region.
