AFCON 2019 FINAL: Senegal Hopes For History In Battle Against Algeria

The Cairo International Stadium in Egypt will once again come alive when the Tarranga Lions of Senegal battle the Desert Foxes of Algeria in the Final match of the African Cup of Nations, AFCON 2019 today (Friday).

The game will mark the conclusion of the 32nd edition of the competition, which witnessed an increase in the number of participating teams from 16 to 24.

While Senegal will be hoping to mark history having never won the crown at the competition, Algeria on the other hand will be seeking a second title, with the first coming in 1990.

The 2019 AFCON has witnessed dramatic twists of surprises as Madagascar and Benin shook spectators with their quarter-final runs.

Not done with surprises, Egypt, Morocco and current holders Cameroon suffered tragedies, which saw them crashing out of the tournament.

Notable stars of the two teams, Mane and Mahrez will be taking centre stage in the battle for supremacy as both camps have remained upbeat ahead of the encounter.

Recall that both players won major club titles this past season — Mahrez the EPL with Manchester City and Mane the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool.

But they both know that winning the AFCON for their countries would be something special.

“To be in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations is something unbelievable,” Mahrez said.

On his part, Mane said “To win for my country, which has never won an AFCON, would be magnificent.”

The match comes up at 8pm.
