Budget: Reps Vote To Override Presidential Assent After 30 Days

The House of Representatives, on Thursday, reinforced the powers of the National Assembly to override the President in the passage of Budget and other Bills passed should the president withhold assent for 30 days.

The house passed the vote while considering the amendments to the 1999 Constitution during Thursday’s plenary.

The House also voted in favour of the devolution of powers to state governments.

210 members of the lower legislative chamber voted in favour of the bill, while 71 voted against it, with 8 abstaining from the vote.

The amendment seeks to alter the “second schedule, part I & II to move certain items to the Concurrent Legislative List to give more legislative powers to States. It also delineates the extent to which the federal legislature and state assemblies can legislate on the items that have been moved to the concurrent legislative list.”

The Lower Legislative Chamber also voted for 35 affirmative positions for women in politics.
