The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, on Wednesday, said that 405,000 volunteers have responded to help the National Health Service (NHS) defeat the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.

According to him, the government had to call for volunteers because medical practitioners in the country were already overwhelmed with the rising number of health issues to attend to.

“What everyone needs to recognize is that our NHS , like any world class health service has any limited numbers of doctors and specialist equipments.

“So, the more people become sick at any one time, the harder it is for NHS to scope,” he added.

He said that he hoped to get 250,000 volunteers within a few days but was surprised to get 405,000 people within 24 hours.

He also said that the roles of these volunteers would be to drive medicines from pharmacies to patients and bring patients home from hospital.

“Very importantly, they will be making regular phone calls to check on and support people who are staying on their own at home and they will be absolutely crucial in the fight against this virus,” he added.

He maintained that more hands were needed to delay the spread of the disease and reduce the number of victims.

“I wanna thank everyone who has been following the clear rules we set out on Monday and I wanna thank everyone in NHS, everyone fighting against coronavirus and our public services.

“I want to remind everyone of our core policy, stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives,” Johnson said.
