Covid-19: Not All Vaccines Will Work, WHO DG Warns

Director General of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom, has advised countries to be wary of the numerous Covid-19 vaccine claims.

He warned that not all of them would be effective in the treatment of the coronavirus.

“We have no guarantee that any single vaccine now in development will work.

“Almost 200 vaccines for COVID-19 are currently in clinical and pre-clinical testing. The history of vaccine development tells us that some will fail, and some will succeed,” Tedros said on Monday during the press briefing in Geneva.

Meanwhile, he maintained that the right vaccines were crucial in the fight against the pandemic.

Also, he stated that WHO’s Covid-19 facility was coordinating the response to ensure that the vaccine was equitably distributed when finally out.

“The COVAX Facility enables governments to spread the risk of vaccine development and ensure their populations can have early access to effective vaccines.

“Even more importantly, the COVAX Facility is the mechanism that will enable a globally-coordinated rollout for the greatest possible impact.

“The COVAX Facility will help to bring the pandemic under control, save lives, accelerate the economic recovery and ensure that the race for vaccines is a collaboration, not a contest,” he said.

Furthermore, he noted that WHO was working toward having about 2 billion covid-19 vaccines in circulation by 2021.

“Our aim is to have 2 billion doses of vaccine available by the end of 2021,” he said.
