Obasanjo To Buhari, Negotiate With Kanu Before It’s Too Late

President Muhammadu Buhari must reach out to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), before it gets too late, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned.

“I don’t see anything wrong in that [Buhari meeting with Kanu]. I would not object to that; if anything, I would encourage it,” Obasanjo told Newsweek.

Obasanjo’s warning comes close on the heels of alleged killings of members of IPOB by soldiers of the Operation Python Dance II (Egwu Eke II) in Nigeria’s South East.

The former president, while flaying the military for its “heavy boot” approach to solving Biafra agitations, stated that Army’s high-handedness can not quell secession calls.

Obasanjo therefore said if he were President Buhari, he “would want to meet Kanu [himself] and talk to people like him, people of his age, [and ask:] ‘What are your worries?’ Not only from the southeast but from all parts of Nigeria.”

Speaking further, the former president said, “We need to satisfy the youth in job creation, in wealth creation, in giving them a better, fulfilled life, in giving them hope for the future. There’s no easy way out.”
