Otti Orders Evacuation Of Residents As Gully Erosion Threatens Buildings In Aba

Many people living on Ovom Street in Aba, Abia State, have either been relocated by the Abia State government or left the area themselves due to the escalating gully erosion in the vicinity.

The gully erosion, which started as a minor issue several years ago, has now resulted in extensive road damage, leading to the destruction of numerous buildings and other properties.

Abia State governor, Dr. Alex Otti addressed the press on Sunday after visiting a devastated area. He expressed concern that if the issues were not addressed promptly, the widespread erosion would not only impact all buildings in the area but could also affect the opposite side of the road where an ongoing road project is being carried out by the administration.

Otti instructed the General Manager of Greater Aba Development Agency (GASA), Mr. Uche Ukeje, to immediately provide solutions to the problem within a few weeks.

He reassured the residents of the area that addressing the issue would involve engineers and contractors rather than direct labor. He emphasized that he had directed GASA to evacuate residents living in the affected area.

“I had asked him to evacuate everybody that is living around here.

“So, if you look around these houses, there is nobody in there. Those who are very close here, I had already gotten them evacuated.

“So, I hope nobody goes back to some of these buildings because it’s very dangerous,” he stated.
