We Have No $1.057bn In Secret Account, Says NPA

The Nigerian Ports Authority has denied claims by a whistleblower alleging that the agency had hidden $1.05bn dollar in a secret account.

“There is no clone account as speculated in the alleged whistle blowing efforts of Mr Okpurhe,” the General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications of the NPA, Jatto Adams said in a statement.

The NPA refuted the claims after John Okpurhe, petitioned the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, for refusing to reward him after he had exposed the allegedly hidden $1.05bn in an account with Unity Bank Plc and allegedly run by the NPA.

The NPA said the account does not exist based on evidence from a letter issued by Unity Bank Plc.

The agency said it operates an account with the said bank, with account number: 0013670344 having a total of $1.05m as of December 4, 2019 and not $1.03bn as alleged by the petitioner.

The agency, however, admitted that its account with Unity Bank Plc, has not been operated since August 7, 2010, following a Garnishee process.

The processes had resulted in the account being credited with the sum of $1.05m in favour of the suit, “FHC/L/CS/582/2010 Garnishee Order Nisi- Aminu Ibrahim & Anor. VS. Nigerian Ports Authority.”

The NPA said, “The account number under discussion was frozen on the strength of a court order in August 2010, following the completion of the case, the money was consequently transferred to the judgement creditor on December 4, 2019 in line with the Garnishee Order Absolute.”
