Amotekun: Ex-NPF Spokesman, Amore Asks FG Not To Politicize Security

Former spokesman of the Nigerian Police Force, Olusola Amore has cautioned the federal government not to politicize issues of security of lives and properties in the country.

Amore, a retired commissioner of police, was reacting to the declaration of the South West zonal security outfit, Amotekun, as illegal by the federal government in an interview with THE WHISTLER on Wednesday.

The Western Nigeria Security Outfit codenamed Operation Amotekun was launched in Ibadan, Oyo State, last Thursday.

But on Tuesday the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), declared the security task force as illegal.

Amore said Amotekun could not be declared illegal since it was not established as a force by any law, stressing that the security outfit was no different from other adhoc security measures commonly taken by many Nigerians.

“It is simply not illegal as no law was passed for the operation of Amotekun. They are just like guards employed to protect residences or streets. So unless the use of security guards in residences and offices are deemed illegal.

“Politicizing security issues is not going to help our complex security challenges, because those benefitting from the situation will always complicate our security problems.”

Amore urged state governments in the South West not to be discouraged by the federal government’s action.

“The region should continue to work together to solve problems confronting the region in the area of security.”
