ASUU : Merit Has Been Sacrificed In Varsity Recruitment

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said that some lecturers working in the Nigerian universities were employed on the basis of their political connections and not by merit.

The union made this known on Sunday via a tweet on @ASUUNGR.

According to ASUU’s national president, Biodun Ogunyemi, the poor recruitment process in Nigerian varsities has over the years, aided the influx of unqualified teachers into the system.

Recall that the executive secretary of the National Universities Commission, Abubakar Rasheed, had revealed that there are fake professors operating across the nation’s tertiary institution, to the detriment of quality education.

Ogunyemi also added that the rot in the university system is due to the fact that “merit is sacrificed on the altar of mediocrity.”

Furthermore, he urged government to come back to the negotiation table so as to fish out the culprits as well as forge the way forward that will create a better system where competence and quality education is enthroned.

He also stressed that drastic measures needs to be urgently taken as some of the lecturers are unable to teach.
