Customs Seeks Stronger Global Trade Partnerships

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has said stronger international partnerships are critical to improving border security, trade facilitation and economic competitiveness.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, stated this during a diplomatic mission, with ambassadors, high commissioners, heads of mission, and senior government officials in attendance.

Adeniyi said the gathering seeks to discuss areas of cooperation, while noting that modern customs administration requires close collaboration among customs authorities, diplomatic missions and security agencies to address emerging challenges in global trade and border management.

According to him, “sustained collaboration among customs administrations, diplomatic missions, and security agencies remains critical to achieving efficient border security, enhanced revenue generation, and improved economic competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global trade environment.”

The Customs boss noted that the NCS has expanded its international engagements through structured collaboration frameworks with more than 20 customs administrations worldwide.

He said the partnerships are focused on knowledge exchange, capacity development and operational synergy aimed at improving trade facilitation and border management.

Adeniyi further stressed the need for continuous engagement and trust-building among international partners, saying the increasingly interconnected nature of global trade demands collective action.

He said modern Customs administration now operates within a highly interconnected global system, requiring continuous engagement, trust-building, and shared responsibility among international partners to address emerging challenges in trade, security, and compliance management.

Adeniyi also highlighted the importance of dialogue-driven engagements in strengthening bilateral relations and identifying new areas of cooperation.

He added that platforms such as the diplomatic reception provide valuable opportunities for dialogue, relationship building, and the exploration of new areas of cooperation that will further strengthen Nigeria’s trade and diplomatic architecture.
