EFCC Arrests Nigerian-American Over Alleged $320,000 Vehicle Scam

Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a dual Nigerian-American citizen, Adegoke Oluwatobi Adams, over an alleged luxury vehicle importation fraud involving more than $320,000 (about N436m).

The EFCC said Adams is being investigated for alleged criminal breach of trust and obtaining money under false pretences.

According to the commission, preliminary findings indicate that the suspect is linked to a group allegedly involved in the fraudulent sale and importation of luxury vehicles from the United States to Nigeria.

Investigators alleged that Adams advertised a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG to prospective buyers in Nigeria while residing in the United States.

The commission said two individuals subsequently made payments totalling $320,000 for the vehicle.

According to the EFCC, one of the complainants, Ikechukwu Osita Ifeabunike, paid $145,000 through an intermediary, while another victim, Godson Azubuike Amans, allegedly transferred $175,000.

The anti-graft agency also stated that its investigation revealed that the suspect had previously faced legal issues in the United States relating to motor vehicle offences.

The EFCC said Adams was arrested upon his arrival in Nigeria following intelligence gathering and surveillance by operatives.

The commission added that he would be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
