Goodluck Jonathan Returns To Mali

In view of the ongoing plans to resolve the socio-political crisis in the nation of Mali, Nigeria’s former president Goodluck Jonathan is in the country for further talks.

Recall that Jonathan was appointed by the Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) Commission to lead a delegation that would resolve the country’s crisis which had taken several lives.

His team had earlier recommended, among things, a government of national unity to resolve the crisis.

The delegation had explained that the problem bedeviling the nation was tied to representation in government.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Jonathan disclosed that he arrived to further push what had already been endorsed by the ECOWAS leadership.

“I arrived Bamako this afternoon to continue with the Ecowas_Cedeao mediation efforts towards resolving the socio-political crisis in Mali.

“My follow-up visit is to engage stakeholders on the implementation of the decisions and roadmap endorsed by the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of States and Government after their Extraordinary Virtual Summit held on July 27, 2020.
As West Africans, we have a shared destiny and should never be tired of rallying round each other to solve problems in our geographical space,” he said.

The document which was issued on July 27 after the summit , had backed the Jonathan-led delegation’s position on the unity government.

“A National Unity Government will be established rapidly in line with the recommendations of the Mediator.

“The Heads of State and Government encourage the opposition, in particular, the M5-RFP, to participate in this National Unity Government.

“The main task of this National Unity Government will be to deal with the consequences of the demonstrations, and to implement all reforms and recommendations issued from the Inclusive National Dialogue and to improve governance.
