Kano APC Chairman Abducted As Gunmen Kill Two In Rogo

The abduction of an All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in Kano State has raised fresh security concerns after gunmen invaded Rogo Local Government Area, killing two residents during the operation.

The latest attack occurred around 11pm on Monday, with the assailants reportedly targeting the APC chairman of Rogo LGA, Alhaji Abdullahi Fanka.

PUNCH reported that a resident, who spoke on Tuesday on condition of anonymity because of security concerns, said the attackers opened sporadic gunfire after entering the community, forcing residents to flee.

According to the source, two people were killed when they attempted to resist the abduction of Fanka.

“The two people killed couldn’t stop them from whisking away the party chairman because they were in possession of sophisticated weapons,” the resident said.

Fanka’s abduction came less than 24 hours after gunmen reportedly killed the APC chairman of Rantan Ward in Bebeji LGA, Alhaji Garba Buba, and another resident, Sulaiman Zunduma.

The Bebeji attack has already prompted the Kano State Police Command to begin investigations and efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.

The latest incident is also the third major security incident reported in neighbouring parts of the state within about 72 hours.

On Saturday night, suspected bandits invaded Chiromawa community in Garun Mallam LGA and abducted the Sarkin Noman Kano, Alhaji Yusif Nadabo.

Nadabo was subsequently rescued after security operatives and residents responded to the attack. Three residents were reportedly injured in the incident.

The succession of attacks has renewed fears among residents over the spread of kidnapping and armed violence across rural communities in Kano.

The incidents also came shortly after the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, announced that the Federal Government was working on a five-year defence and security strategy.

Matawalle disclosed the plan on Monday against the backdrop of recent security challenges, including the attacks recorded in Kano.

Efforts to obtain an official update from the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing the report.

Calls to his telephone line went unanswered, while a WhatsApp message sent to him had yet to receive a response.
