The Cityzens suffered an embarrassing 3-1 to Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday coupled with a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League to dampen their title hopes.
Pep Guardiola made six changes to the side that lost to Manchester United with Erling Haaland, and Phil Foden dropping to the bench, new signing Marc Guehi was handed his first start.
Omar Marmoush gave the hosts the lead in the sixth minute with a tidy finish.
It was the Egyptian’s first Premier League goal of the season in his first league game since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations.
All eight of Marmoush’s Premier League goals have been scored at the Etihad Stadium – the most goals by any player in the competition’s history with 100% coming at the same ground.

Semenyo sealed the win with a superb finish to hand Man City the maximum points with his third goal since joining the club two weeks ago.
Guardiola was delighted with the victory while praising Guehi, and Marmoush for their performances.
He said: “We won against a team who were unbeaten in the last four or five games so pretty pleased.
On Omar Marmoush: “People have a question of numbers. Assists, goals, assists, goals, assists, goals so I’m happy with Omar for his energy. We did it.”
On Marc Guehi making his debut for the club: “The captain of Crystal Palace has to be something special. I’m really pleased for him. He is so demanding for ourselves to do better. Good players adapt quickly and understand the game so that’s why.”

In the other Premier League games, Tottenham played out a disappointing 2-2 draw against Burnley.
Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze was on target to lead Fulham to a 2-1 win over Brighton.
West Ham defeated Sunderland 3-1 to boost their relegation survival hopes.
Man City will be back in action against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium.
