Nigeria Player Izu Joseph Shot Dead

Shooting Stars defender, Izu Joseph, has died after he was hit by a stray bullet in Bayelsa State on Sunday.

Reports have it that he was killed during a gun battle between the military Joint Task Force (JTF) and suspected militants in the region.

The player was rushed to a nearby hospital after the incident, but couldn’t make it.

Shooting Stars broke the news of the death of their defender Monday morning.

“A Shooting STAR is gone! Izu Joseph is gone! Flamboyant defender is gone! RIP, brother. What a life! May God strengthen his family #Tragedy,” the club wrote on its twitter handle.

Joseph who joined the club three years ago helped the Oluloye Warlords finish in 15th position at the end of the season, with 47 points from 36 games.

The Nigerian Football Federation tweeted: “Our thoughts are with the Mgt. & Staff of @Official3SC on the shocking loss of their player, Izu Joseph. May his soul Rest In Peace! #RIPIzu”.

Other Nigeria Professional Football League clubs including champions Enugu Rangers, also condoled with the Ibadan-based side on the loss of their player.

The year 2016 has witnessed various deaths in Nigerian football, with the likes of Stephen Keshi and Amodu Shaibu among those who lost their lives in the course of the year.
