Reopening: ASUU, Other Protesting Workers Lock Out LASU Vice-Chancellor, Students

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities
and other staff unions on Monday staged a protest and prevented the Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University, Prof Olanrewaju Fagboun, and students of the school from resuming back to the university.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had announced that final year students in tertiary institutions would resume today after coronavirus hiatus but the protesting workers prevented this.

The Non-Academic Staff Union, and the National Association of Academic Technologists were also part of the angry workers who staged the protest against non-payment of the salary increment promised them by the Lagos State Government.

The protesting workers, it was gathered, stormed the main entrance of the Lagos State Government owned university and prevented principal officers, workers and students from going into the campus.

They claimed the government promised them the increment over a year ago and failed to implement it.

They also said other Lagos State workers had received the increment but all the tertiary institutions in Lagos State were yet to be included.

They alleged marginalisation and vowed to paralyse activities in all state owned tertiary institutions until the increment was implemented.

They said their counterparts in all tertiary institutions owned by the state were also staging similar protests against reopening.

The LASU VC’s efforts to pacify the angry workers were rebuffed .
