SERAP Urges N’Assembly To Revoke CAMA…Says It’s Most Repressive Law In History

The Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the National Assembly to revoke the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020.

It described it as a harsh law and not useful to Nigerians.

SERAP also alerted Nigerians to publicly reject CAMA, alleging that politicians were scheming to leverage on it to further exploit them.

“@nassnigeria must revoke draconian #CAMA2020.

“CAMA2020 is most repressive law in Nigeria’s history.

“Nigerians, ‘Shine Your Eyes’, politicians will use #CAMA2020 to cover up their corruption and enrich themselves.

“Then, they’ll go after you and take away your human rights and human dignity.

“Reject #CAMA2020 Now!,” SERAP tweeted on Thursday.

Recall that the CAMA, in weeks past, generated a lot of controversies, especially with regards to regulating the operations of religious organisations.

Meanwhile, the Vice President , Yemi Osinbajo, had, at a meeting with the Nigerian Bar Association, urged all concerned parties to approach the National Assembly and request the review of the law, being the right democratic step to follow.

But, the Corporate Affairs Commission’s Registrar General, Alhaji Garba Abubakar, had maintained that the CAMA was good for the country.

“We are talking about making our laws to be of global standards.

“We look at those provisions in other jurisdictions that will strengthen our legal framework.

“Suspensions of Trustees is not targeted at any particular group.

” What we have done is to bring our laws to be consistent with other countries, ” he said.
