UNILAG Senate Rejects Removal Of VC

– Calls For Dissolution of Council

The Senate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Thursday rejected the purported removal of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, by the Governing Council.

It also passed ” a vote of no confidence on the Governing Council of the university chaired by Dr. Bolanle Olawale Babalakin, SAN.

The senate urged the visitor to the university to immediately dissolve the council.

The senate adopted the resolution at its emergency meeting held on Thursday, and signed by Chairman, Senate Emergency Committee, Professor Chioma K. Agomo, and five other senate members.

Recall that the council, in a statement by the Registrar and Secretary to Council Oladejo Azeez, removed the VC over alleged financial misappropriation.

But, the senate stressed that the action of the council violated Section 3(8),(9),(10) and (11) of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act, 2003.

It further said that the senate ” was neither invited to participate not did it participate in any Joint Committee of Council and Senate as required by law.”

It added that the appointment of an Acting VC breached section 3(8)(13) of the Act.

As such, it resolved to: “Reject the purported removal of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin T Ogundipe, FAS.

“Reaffirm its Confidence in Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos.

“Reject the appointment of Professor Theophilus Omololu Soyombo, as the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos.”
