Vehicle Carrying Perishable Goods Set Ablaze In Enugu Despite Cancellation Of Sit-At-Home

A vehicle conveying tomatoes, vegetables, okro and pepper to Enugu metropolis was Monday morning burnt by yet-to-be identified people. The incident occurred at Edem junction, Ibagwa Nike, along Enugu-OPi Nsukka road.

The vehicle is suspected to be coming from Benue State or border local government area of Isi-Uzo.

The chief fire officer of the state, Engr Okwudiri Ohaa, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

He said, “It is true. It is a Ford vehicle, carrying tomatoes and other perishables. We were contacted through our emergency number, and we responded immediately. It happened early this morning.

“Kudos should go to the state government for equipping her state fire service stations for emergencies like this. We are not happy over these incidents. The lesson to learn from all this is to avoid what can trigger negative consequences. IPOB has suspended its action, still this ugly incident happened today in our peaceful Enugu State.”

The incident further casts doubts if the suspended Monday sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra is effective. IPOB had two weeks ago vowed to deal with anybody or group implementing the orders in any southeast states.

However, since the suspension of the order, business activities in Enugu and its environs have remained skeletal.

THE WHISTLER reported last Monday that despite the suspension, markets, filling stations, banks and shops remained shut in Enugu State. There were also gunshots in some parts of the state capital last Monday.
