Also, the state’s ministry of health in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Nwabueze Nwankwo, also warned hospitals and mortuaries operating in the state against allowing ‘Onyeze Jesus’ access to their facilities on 28th January.

Onyeze Jesus had, in a well-publicised message, claimed that he possessed spiritual powers and would raise seven corpses from the dead to prove his power.

Before that, a series of videos released by the him had trended on social media about his religious activities, including the ones where he paraded naked adult males and females in a river while spreading naira currencies on them.

He had also been accused, among others, of abusing the Nigerian currency (Naira notes), cruelty to animals and promising to make people get-rich-quick.

AfAW, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Leo Igwe, commended the police and government of Anambra State for “apprehending this religious loose cannon called Onyeze Jesus and for taking prompt measures to address the promotion of superstition in the State.

“Superstitious nonsense is destroying the state of Anambra and hampering its growth and development.

“Onyeze Jesus should be tried and punished according to the law to deter other religious mischief-makers. AfAW wishes to inform the government that religious exploitation is pervasive in Anambra State.

“There are many Onyeze Jesus operating and conning gullible persons in different parts of the state. The police should extend their investigation to other religious con artists and fraudulent religious ministries in the state.”
