Army GOC Visits Ohanaeze In Enugu

The Nigerian Army should be humane and compassionate in their relationship with commuters and people of the Southeast, president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Prof George A. Obiozor, said.

Prof Obiozor spoke Tuesday evening when the general officer commanding 82 Division of Nigerian Army, Major General T.A. Lagbaja, visited him at the national secretariat of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Enugu.

He commended the army for their roles in ensuring security of lives and property in the Southeast zone. He further appealed for the creation of necessary and conducive environment to reduce tension and feeling of insecurity in the zone.

He told the GOC about various complaints by commuters and passengers on the roads in the Southeast zone over army checkpoints, and appealed to him to look into the complaints with a view to finding lasting solutions to them.

Responding, General Lagbaja said he would look into the complaints, including complaints of commuters that they were being made to alight from their vehicles and compelled to raise their hands while crossing various military checkpoints in the zone.

THE WHISTLER reports that the meeting also observed a minute of silence in honour of two former deceased first ladies of the Southeast, Chief Mrs Victoria Aguiyi Ironsi, and Chief Mrs Adanma Okpara, wives of the former military head of state, Major General J.T.U. Aguiyi Ironsi, and Dr Michael I. Okpara, former premier of the defunct Eastern Region, respectively.
