The confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been rejected by the Nigerian Senate.

Magu, who has been on acting capacity as chairman of the commission for about one year, was rejected based on security reports available to the upper legislative chamber.

His rejection was said to have caused a brawl between leader of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume and Senator Dino Melaye, who reportedly kicked against Magu’s confirmation during a closed-door meeting.

The Senate’s final position on Magu’s confirmation was disclosed, Thursday, by Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Abdullahi Sabi.

Sabi said that the upper house of the National Assembly has since sent the nomination back to President Muhammadu Buhari for further action.

“The Senate wishes to inform the public that based on available security report, the Senate cannot proceed with the confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

“The nomination of Ibrahim Magu is hereby rejected and has been returned to the President for further action,” Sabi said.
