COVID-19 Kills ‘Promising’ Younger Brother Of Lagos Deputy Governor

The family of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has been thrown into mourning following the death of their 37-year-old doctor son.

Horoun Hamzat, a medical doctor at a primary health center in the Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area of the state, reportedly died from coronavirus complications.

The Lagos Deputy Governor confirmed Horoun’s death in an Instagram post on Tuesday: “It is with utmost sadness that I announce the passing of my younger Brother. Dr. Haroun Hamzat.”

Horoun was said to have fallen sick before taking the COVID-19 test that returned positive. He reportedly died at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, where he was receiving medical care.

Available information on his LinkedIn and Academia profiles indicate that the deceased was an alumnus of the University of Lagos and the Oxford Brooks University.

According to his LinkedIn profile, the deceased held a Master’s degree in public health and was the Chief Executive Officer of El-plums Solutions Limited.

The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) described his demise as “a dark moment” in the association.

The NMA said, “Its “sunset at dawn” as he was just 37 years old. He worked as a medical officer at one of the PHCs under Orile Agege LCDA until his demise.

“We commiserate with his immediate family, friends, associates, colleagues and staff of Lagos State PHC Board and indeed the medical fraternity of Lagos State. We pray against such premature deaths in our fold.”
