Oyo: One Dies, Three Injured As Lift Crashes At Cocoa House

One person was reported dead while three were injured when the lift at the Cocoa House in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, crashed on Wednesday.

The incident which was said to have happened at around 11am, caused panic among occupants and guests at the 25-storey building.

Some of the workers in one of the companies at the premises told our correspondent that the lift crashed when a team of technicians were carrying out a repair work on it.

The lift dropped on the technicians who were at the basement, killing one of them instantly while three of them were injured.

The Corporate Affairs Manager of the Odua Investment Company Limited, Mr Victor Ayetoro, confirmed the incident in a statement.

He said the incident had been reported to the police.

The statement read, “At around 11.00am this morning, the lift installation team from our contractor handling the lift and who were working on dismantling the old lift in readiness for a new lift instalment, while working on the lift suffered a mechanical failure.”

“The said failure resulted in the lift car dropping and crashing into the basement pit. Unfortunately, one of the technicians in the team did not survive the incident.”

“Three other technicians suffered minor injuries and have been taken to the hospital for check up/ treatment.

“The head office of the company has been informed and their representatives have arrived to take charge of the situation while the Police have also been informed.”
