Covid-19: We’re Not Deceiving Nigerians With Figures-NCDC

The Director General of the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control(NCDC) Chikwe Ihekweazu, has said there is no global collaboration to deceive Nigerians on the existence of Covid19 in the country.

The DG said this on Thursday during the presidential Task force briefing while addressing the issue of alleged doubts among some Nigerians about the existence of the virus.

“This increase in numbers is not unusual and as we increase testing and ease the lockdown this is a virus that goes from one person to the other , therefore it is most likely that we will see an increase in number. whether the increase continues or not depends on our collective actions and sometimes this numbers are necessary to remind us of that reality.

“While the number of deaths might appear small these are all people that many of us have gotten to know and everyday you get to hear about a friend that unfortunately has passed away.

“We see lots of suspicion around the numbers, we sometimes wonder if the people saying that are not watching what is happening across the world. Are we all collectively with india , brazil, the US, UK, in some global collaboration to deceive Nigerians, not the case, this is the reality of what we face and we have to come together to address it.”

He further said states with the most number of cases were struggling to keep up because people are staying away from contact tracing currently on going to fetch out infected people.

According to him, it is sometimes difficult to know when someone contract the virus.

“States with the most number of cases , Lagos FCT and Kano are struggling the most to do contact tracing, because the more cases you have the larger the number of contacts you have to follow everyday.

“Right now the case to contact ratio is smallest in the states with a lot of cases and they are really struggling to keep up. This is really to encourage them across the country to keep pushing in this direction.”

Meanwhile Nigeria has a total of 13,873 Covid-19 cases, 4,351 recoveries and a total of 382 deaths.
