Death Toll rises, More injured Victims Rescued From Lagos Collapsed Building

The death toll in the three- storey building which collapsed at Freeman Street , Lagos on Saturday has risen to three.

Also, three more occupants of the house have been rescued and taken to hospital for treatment.

THE WHISTLER had earlier reported that one male child was confirmed dead while six occupants were injured.

The Director General of Lagos State Emergency Management. Agency, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the latest development on the Twitter handle of the agency said three were killed in the building while nine were rescued and taken to hospital.

Sympathisers joined men of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, fire brigade, the police , ambulance unit and other government agencies to search for victims who might still be buried under the rubble.

Search and rescue operation is still ongoing at the site as at the time of filing this report .

The tweet read, “The team led by the Director General/CEO LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu and the Director of Operations, Engineer Olatunde Akinsanya, discovered that a three- storey building totally collapsed on people while asleep around
few minutes past 3:00am.

“As the DG LASEMA and the agency’s team take the lead in the search and rescue mission alongside the Nigeria Police, Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, LASG FIRE, National Emergency Management Authority, Lagos State Building Control Agency. Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Lagos State Ambulance Services,LASAMBUS, a total of 9 occupants have been rescued alive and rushed to the hospital by the combined team of responders.

“Three fatalities recorded and handed over to State Environmental Health Monitoring for onward transfer to the morgue.”

He said the agency had deployed its excavator to carry out a controlled demolition of the building to avert a secondary incident.
