#EndSARS: SERAP Doubts FG’s Sincerity In Dissolution Of Squad

Following the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force, the Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Projects (SERAP) has queried the sustainability of the decision.

THE WHISTLER had earlier reported that the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had on Sunday, dissolved the SARS with immediate effect across all the 36 State Police Commands and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The announcement was due to widespread criticisms and protests against the unconstitutional conduct of some officials of SARS.

But in a reactionary tweet, SERAP stressed that the IGP’s disclosure was not different from what ensued in 2015.

SERAP maintained that time would tell if the Federal Government had indeed listened to the yearnings of Nigerians.

“Nigerian authorities have since 2015 promised to address police brutality and impunity and to reform #SARS but have repeatedly failed to do so. Can this government be trusted now?,” SERAP tweeted.

Meanwhile, Human Rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has asked the IGP to quickly look into the matter of those unlawfully arrested by SARs.

“Beyond the dissolution of SARS, there are pertinent issues that must be addressed.

“For example, what will happen to suspects detained by the defunct SARS, particularly those wrongly detained?

“There should be an independent taskforce in every State to review all cases,” he tweeted.
