Fani-Kayode To Trump: I Love You, But You Goofed By Opposing Okonjo-Iweala’s WTO Bid

Former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has reacted to the United States’ opposition to the candidacy of former Nigerian finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for the position of director-general of the World Trade Organisation.

The U.S. announced on Wednesday that it was rooting for South Korean Trade Minister, Yoo Myung-hee, against the majority of 164 member countries backing Okonjo-Iweala.

Fani-Kayode said he was an avid supporter of Trump, but frowned at America’s opposition to Okonjo-Iweala’s bid for the top WTO job.

The former minister warned that the position taken by the U.S. may cost Trump millions of Nigerains and Africans who support his reelection bid.

“I love Donald Trump and I want him to win the presidential election on November 3rd. I believe he is the best for America and the world and that he is the only one that is capable of standing up to China,” Fani-Kayode said in a Facebook post on Thursday.

“I do not however believe that he is infallible and his decision to block Ngozi Ojonjo-Iweala as the DG of World Trade Organisation proves that.

“This extraordinary lady is by far the best candidate, her integrity is unimpeachable and her ability is unquestionable.
Opposing her has upset millions of Trump-lovers in Nigeria and Africa and hundreds of thousands of Nigerian/Americans in the U.S. itself. I hope he reconsiders,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that the Trump administration’s opposition to Okonjo-Iweala may unsettle the selection process and cause more diplomatic friction with trading partners like the European Union.
