FG To Tackle Climate Change Challenge Through Planting Of Six Million Trees

The federal government has disclosed its plans to plant six million trees this year in its bid to help combat climate change issues

This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako during a courtesy visit by the Managing Director of Nature News, Mr. Rasheed Yusuf in his office in Abuja.

Salako who stated that the tree planting was part of the 18 key deliverable areas of the ministry, also urged the Nigerians to plant at least one tree per person to augment government efforts in greening the environment, emphasizing that animals and plants are very important in the ecosystem.

The minister pledged to collaborate with the media on environmental awareness, adding whatever the ministry is doing would not have optimal impact without media publicity.

He further stated that the ministry’s policies and programmes required a lot of sensitisation and media campaigns in order to educate the general public on environmental sustainability and protection.

Salako further revealed that the ministry would this year scale up its media publicity activities and urged the media to be part of the campaign to educate and sensitize the public on the environment.

Earlier,the Managing Director, Nature News, Mr. Rasheed Yusuf, congratulated the minister on his appointment and solicited for more areas of collaboration between the ministry and his organisation.

Meanwhile, the minister during a recent courtesy visit by the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society led by its President Prof. Akinade Olatunji, disclosed that the ministry plans to strengthen the Planning, Research and Statistics Department ( PRS) to conduct research on the issues affecting the environment.
