KANO ‘CHIP WHIP’: DSS Arrests Suspects Behind Fake Number Plate

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested the suspects behind the production of a counterfeit number plate that was misspelled as ‘Chip Whip’ instead of ‘Chief Whip’ in Kano State.

The fake number plate had been widely circulated on social media after some Nigerians spotted the error on it. The fake number plate was spotted on an SUV allegedly owned by the Chief Whip of Kano State House of Assembly.

The DSS arrested the suspects in collaboration with the officials Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Friday.

FRSC spokesperson, Bisi Kazeem, who announced the arrest in a statement, said the suspects specialized in producing fake number plates.

Kazeem said the suspects were arrested during a joint operation between the FRSC and DSS in Kano and Kebbi States.

“In a swift investigation and tactically orchestrated covert operation, by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Department of State Services (DSS), to track down the producers of fake Number Plates in the country; both agencies have apprehended some syndicates in Kano and Kebbi states in connection with the production of illegal number plates including the fake Kano ‘ Chip Whip’ Number Plate,” he said.

Kazeem said the suspects were arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court 1 in the capital Birnin Kebbi on Friday.

He said the accused pleaded not guilty but were remanded in prison custody until November 28, 2019 for further hearing.
