Militant group, Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) and The Eleme Youth Council (EYC) in Eleme local government area of Rivers state, have given contradictory statements over responsibility for the vandalised pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Eleme.

The Niger Delta Avengers had in a Facebook post on Wednesday, claimed responsibility for the vandalisation on the NNPC Pipeline.

It said: “By 3.00 am, yesterday (Wednesday), strike team 2, carried out a major strike, bombing NNPC pipeline at Eleme leading to NLNG. You won’t stop us.”

However, the president of EYC, Prince Brian Emere Gokpa, while speaking to newsmen on Thursday, July 7, refuted the claims by the Niger Delta Avengers, describing it as “unfounded and baseless.”

He alleged that impostors were behind the claim, adding that not all messages now being churned out about activities of the Niger Delta Avengers were true.

Gokpa said: “The attention of Eleme Youth Council World-wide has been drawn to an online publication that the Niger Delta Avengers blew up pipelines in Eleme local government area.”

“This information is not true; it is unfounded and baseless. It is the imagination of mischief makers whose aim is to project Eleme as a terrible local government area.”

“Eleme local government area is relatively peaceful and no person or group of persons should give false alarm about security situation in the area,” he added.

Gokpa insisted that Eleme Local Government Area is relatively peaceful and security operatives have been able to curtail criminal activities in the state to barest minimum.

He equally advised youths in the state to immediately desist from criminal acts in the state.
