Reps Summon Security Chiefs, Ask Wike To Install CCTV Cameras Around Abuja

The House of Representatives on Wednesday summoned the National Security Adviser (NSA) and heads of all security agencies in the country for an emergency security briefing.

The House, worried about rising insecurity in the FCT and it’s environs, called for an in-house briefing by the security chiefs.

The lawmakers also asked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to install security cameras and other security gadgets around the FCT to address the situation.

Adopting a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Dominic Okafor (APGA, Anambra), the House asked heads of all security agencies to collaborate among themselves, train and set up special units within their formations to track and clamp down on the criminal elements within and around the FCT.

In addition, the House asked security agencies to immediately commence the use of the registered National Identification Numbers (NIN) to trace and curb insecurity across the Country.

Moving his motion, Okafor reminded his colleagues that the Federal Capital Territory remained the seat of power and must be protected.

He noted that the Nasarawa state government recently announced plans to install security cameras across their state to curb crime in the state, urging the FCT administration to replicate the security measure.

Okafor said that since criminal elements are adopting advanced techniques of criminality, the security agencies must digitalise their operations and use drones, CCTVs and other modern sophisticated security gadgets to curb crime.

In November 2023, the Senate agreed to probe an abandoned contract for the installation of CCTV cameras in the Abuja metropolis.

The failed contract, previously valued at $460 million, was awarded to a private contractor during the administration of late President Umaru Yar’adua.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, had directed the Senate Committee on FCT to liaise with the Office of the Minister of FCT to investigate the abandoned project.
