Rio Olympics: AFN Names Okagbare, Ogunlewe, 33 Others For Games

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has named 35 Athletes to represent the country at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This was contained in a statement by the AFN Technical Director, Omatseye Nesiama, made available to the media in Lagos on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the athletes, which comprise of 25 females and 11 males, will represent the country at the Games scheduled for Aug. 5 to Aug. 19.

Reigning Commonwealth double sprints queen and former African 100m record holder, Blessing Okagbare and Seye Ogunlewe whose 10.15 seconds earned him a back to back win at the Olympic trials in Sapele, Delta State last weekend tops the list.

Okagbare, who will compete in the 100m, 200m and long jump events, will be gunning for her second Olympic medal in Rio after jumping to a bronze medal finish in her debut in 2008 in Beijing.

She will be joined by Gloria Asumnu, Jennifer Madu, Agnes Osazuwa, Sanni Zainab, Cecilia Francis, Khadija Suleiman and Olivia Ekpone for the women 4x100m relay.

For the women 400m flat and relay, Patience Okon George, Regina George, Margaret Bamgbose, Omolara Omotosho, Yinka Ajayi, Rita Osai, Blessing Mayungbe and Ekundayo Sogbesan made the list.

The other women are Oluwatobiloba Amusan (100m hurdles), Amaka Ogoegbunam (400m hurdles), Doreen Amata (high jump) Ese Brume(long jump),Okoro Chinwe (discus), Nwanneka Okwelogu (shot put).
Meanwhile in the men’s category, Ogunlewe will be joined by Egwero Ogho-Oghene and Edward Monzavous in the 100m category.

Others are Tega Odele Oghenetega, Divine Oduduru (200m), Orukpe Eraiyokan (400m) Anthon Hicks (110m hurdles), Ukaoma Miles (400m hurdles), Oke Tosin, Olamigoke Olumide (triple jump) and Mozia Stephen Shot Put.

The athletics programme at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games runs from 12-21 August.
