School Resumption: ASUU Insists Lecturers Still On Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) has clarified that its strike action was still on.

In a tweet on Friday, ASUU debunked the news going round on social media, which claimed that its strike had been called off.

“Contrary to speculations making the rounds in the social media… that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has called off strike, nothing of such is true,” it tweeted.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of ASUU University of Lagos Chapter, Dele Ashiru, stressed “that nothing of such happened.”

“If we are going to call off our going strike, there is process that will be followed and nothing of such has been done,” he said as quoted in the tweet.

ASUU had gone on strike following disagreements with the federal government on a number of issues, bordering largely on effective funding of university education.

In the midst of the issues, the Covid-19 Presidential Taskforce had given a nod for tertiary institutions to prepare to reopen by the end of the third phase of the eased lockdown.

THE WHISTLER earlier reported that the National Universities Commission(NUC) had on September 22, directed vice-chancellors to fast-track safe reopening arrangements in line with the Covid-19 public health advisory.
